JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jaguars wide receiver Cecil Shorts did not practice Thursday because of a groin injury, but coach Gus Bradley said he will play Sunday against Denver.
Bradley said he held Shorts, the team's leading receiver with 31 catches, out of practice as a preventive measure.
"He's tough and he doesn't say much, but I know with that groin's tightness it was one of those things where I think it's lingering and I just felt like the best thing for him after talking with Mike [Ryan, trainer] and Mylo [strength and conditioning coordinator Tom Myslinski] was to completely hold him out of practice," Bradley said. "Let's let it settle down.
"I just don't want him to get any worse, so it's looking ahead."
In addition to Shorts, quarterback Blaine Gabbert (hamstring), receiver Stephen Burton (concussion), cornerback Dwayne Gratz (ankle), tight end Marcedes Lewis (calf), defensive tackle Roy Miller (shoulder) and defensive end Jeremy Mincey (concussion) also did not practice.
It was the first time Brown has practiced since getting injured in the season opener against Kansas City. Bradley said there's a "really, really strong chance” that Brown will play Sunday.
In addition, left tackle Luke Joeckel underwent surgery Wednesday to repair his fractured right ankle. The surgery was done in Charlotte, N.C.
