RTC: Browns likely to match offer to Mack

By Michael DiRocco

It looks like the Jacksonville Jaguars may have done a lot of negotiating with center Alex Mack for nothing.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday morning that the Cleveland Browns figure to match the five-year offer sheet "in no time at all," according to a source. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com also cited a source that said the Browns will likely match the offer.

One of the interesting subplots in the situation is a clause in the offer sheet that would allow Mack to void the deal in as little as two years, Florio reports. The offer sheet also doesn't include a balloon payment in 2015, which would have been something that would have given the Browns trouble because they have several young players they will need to extend with big-money contracts over the next few seasons.

Here are some additional pieces of Jaguars-related content from around the Web in our daily Reading the Coverage feature:

The Florida Times-Union's Gene Frenette writes that the Jaguars' pursuit of Mack is another sign the franchise wants to be relevant.

Grantland's Robert Mays writes that former Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack, a potential target for the Jaguars with the No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft, is here to chew bubblegum and ruin offenses.

ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett writes that former LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger marvels with his maturity. Mettenberger is scheduled to visit the Jaguars on Thursday.

The NFL released the preseason schedule on Wednesday. The Jaguars play at Tampa Bay and Chicago and play host to Detroit and Atlanta.
