How acquired: 2013 fifth-round draft pick.
2013 season: Commings’ rookie season consisted of three plays on defense. He broke his collarbone in the first practice at training camp, setting him back by months. He returned only to have his season end shortly after because of a shoulder injury. Before that, Commings impressed the Chiefs with his ball skills and instincts in offseason practice. He was going challenge for playing time, whether at free safety or as a third cornerback.
Looking ahead: While his meaningful debut as an NFL player was set back a season, Commings is going to play in 2014, assuming he stays healthy. Starting free safety Kendrick Lewis is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent and Commings could move into Lewis’ spot. He also has coverage skills and the Chiefs may use him as an extra cornerback in passing situations. Either way, the Chiefs like his skills and he figures to be a part of the playing group in the defensive backfield in 2014 and, probably, beyond.
