McCluster looks like he's gone

By Adam Teicher

Dexter McCluster's future with the only NFL team he has known started to come into focus even before the Super Bowl, when the  Kansas City Chiefs signed Canadian Football League wide receiver Weston Dressler. Dressler's addition made no sense if the Chiefs believed they would be able to re-sign McCluster, who is scheduled on Tuesday to become an unrestricted free agent.

While the Chiefs made some attempt to re-sign McCluster since then, the Kansas City Star is reporting those efforts are about to fail. The Star is saying McCluster will move on in free agency.

If that happens, McCluster wouldn't be alone in leaving the Chiefs. Left tackle Branden Albert looks like he's gone to the Miami Dolphins. The Chiefs have also yet to re-sign any of their other top potential unrestricted free agents, a list that includes guards Geoff Schwartz and Jon Asamoah, defensive end Tyson Jackson, linebacker Akeem Jordan and safety Kendrick Lewis.

In the case of McCluster, the Chiefs might be able to replace his production as a slot receiver. His impact there wasn't immense. But his ability as a punt returner is and though the Chiefs have some candidates to replace him and could sign or draft others, they will find his value in that area most difficult to replace.
