Starting tonight, Alex becomes Dr. Smith

By Adam Teicher

Starting tonight, you can refer to the Kansas City Chiefs starting quarterback as Dr. Alex Smith.

Smith tonight will deliver the commencement address at his alma mater, the University of Utah, and receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree.

According to the university, Smith needed just two years at Utah to receive his undergraduate degree in economics after piling up a ton of advanced placement credits in high school in the San Diego area.

Smith's speech is scheduled to start about 9 p.m. ET. If you're interested in watching, the University of Utah website will stream it live.

"I'm humbled to give it," Smith said. "It has been just kind of sitting in the back of my head the entire offseason and now I'm going to give this speech. It will be a great challenge. I am looking forward to it. Obviously, it is a big honor and I am excited about that."

Smith played three seasons at Utah before being drafted No. 1 overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 2005. He donated $500,000 in 2007 to the athletic conditioning facility at Utah.

"I think all of our alma maters have a special place for all of us, but certainly me," Smith said. "I wasn't highly recruited, but Utah gave me an opportunity and I certainly don't think I'd be around today if I didn't make that decision to go there."
