Scouting the Bruins: UCLA has had only one real game in two weeks, which has given coach Ben Howland plenty of practice time to work out some of the issues with the team's man-to-man defense. The Bruins had a nice comeback in a 65-63 victory last Saturday against Texas, but it's clear they still have a long way to go if they are ever going to compete at a high level against good teams. They are looking to win consecutive games for the first time in a month and hope to use the comeback last week as a springboard to success. Now would be a good time to get on a roll as they play their next six games at home. Freshmen Jordan Adams (17.8 ppg) and Shabazz Muhammad (16.0) lead the scoring, and freshman Kyle Anderson leads the rebounding with 7.9 per game and Larry Drew II is fourth in the nation with 8.2 assists per game.

Scouting the Panthers: Prairie View A&M, a Southwestern Athletic Conference school just outside of Houston, is on a two-game win streak as it begins a string of five consecutive road games. The Panthers are a solid defensive team that has held opponents to 37.4 percent shooting and 64.2 points per game. They have played two games this season in which neither team scored more than 44 points but have also scored 80 or more four times, including a 107-59 victory over Dallas Christian the last time out. The Panthers have five starters returning from last season's team that finished fourth in its conference and they were picked to win the league this season. They currently have the best record of any team in the SWAC. Guard Jourdan DeMuynck, a 6-6 senior, leads the team with 13.9 points per game and is second with 6.1 rebounds per game. Backcourt mate Carl Blair is averaging 10.8 points and 5.8 assists. Jules Montgomery, a 6-11 forward who began his career at Long Beach State, leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per game.

The series: The teams have met only one time, a season-opening 82-58 UCLA victory on Nov. 12, 2008. Darren Collison scored 19 points for the Bruins and Malcolm Lee (12 points) and Jrue Holiday (11) hit double figures in their collegiate debuts.

Fast fact: Since taking over in 2006, Panthers coach Byron Rimm has rebuilt Prairie View from a team that averaged 6.6 wins from 2003 to '08 into a conference title contender. ... Rimm played at Cal State Los Angeles and Ventura College before beginning his coaching career as an assistant at Pasadena City College, Chaffey College and Cal State San Bernardino.
