UCLA men’s basketball coach Ben Howland hired former Bruin and NCAA tournament legend Tyus Edney on Monday to be the team’s director of operations. It figures that Edney will be given a chance to make an impact on the program's young and inexperienced core of players.

Only this time, he will have more than just 4.8 seconds to do so.

“He’s a Bruin through and through having graduated from UCLA and brings a wealth of knowledge and energy to the program,” Howland said in statement released by the program.

Edney’s full-court dash capped by a buzzer-beating layup against Missouri in the second round of the 1995 tourney kept UCLA’s national title hopes alive. He was a three-year starter for the Bruins and was named to the All-Pac-10 first team each season.

In other words, Howland is bringing in a proven winner to teach talented guards Malcolm Lee, Jerime Anderson, Tyler Lamb and Lazeric Jones about winning. The Bruins finished 14-18 and missed the NCAA tournament last season.

“I feel our student-athletes will benefit greatly from dealing with Tyus on a daily basis because he has experienced the things they will experience here at UCLA,” Howland said.

Edney, who ranks second on the school’s career assists list, has been a popular name for UCLA fans for over a decade.

“I’m really excited because this is something that I’ve always wanted to do,” Edney said in the statement. “I’m very fortunate to be ending my pro career now with this opportunity presenting itself. I’m thankful that coach Howland gave me this opportunity and has the confidence that I can bring something new and exciting to this great program.”
