Interim football coach Mike Johnson said Friday that he doesn't expect to be retained by new coach Jim Mora after the Bruins play in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Dec. 31.
Johnson, the team's offensive coordinator, said he hasn't directly spoken with Mora about it, but that he's assuming he will be out because he hasn't been offered a job and because Mora is expected to announce the hiring of Arizona State offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone to fill that role at UCLA.
"I don’t think I’m going to stay," Johnson said. "I don’t think I’m going to be part of the staff. Jim and I had a good conversation, but we didn’t even talk about that.
"You’ve got to see the writing on the wall. When you hire Noel Mazzone and you make him your offensive coordinator, you got to see that. Jim and I have been around a long time and you don’t have to tell me ‘no you aren’t going to be a part of our staff.’ I can kind of see that."
Johnson interviewed for the head coaching job at Akron, where he played for two seasons, but said there has been no movement on that front. He said he is committed to coaching the Bruins through the bowl game no matter what happens.
"I’m going to do my job until the 31st," he said. "I’m going to coach these guys, we’re going to show up and we’re going to play hard and then we’ll go from there. I’m under contract at UCLA and I’ve been hired by UCLA to be the interim coach and put this team in a bowl game and put our best foot forward and that’s what we’re going to do."
