USC starts a new sport tomorrow

USC sand volleyball begins varsity competition Saturday in a 10 a.m. match against Loyola Marymount at the Annenberg Beach House in Santa Monica.

It's the first new sport USC has added in 17 years. The school last added women's water polo in 1995 and women's soccer in 1993. The 2012 season is the first across the NCAA for sand volleyball.

Most of the players on the new team come from the regular women's volleyball team, but the coach, Anna Collier, is new. Indoor assistant Cookie Stevens is also assisting the sand volleyball team.

"Sand volleyball is about to explode in this country," Collier said in a statement released by the school. "Our goal is to build one of the signature women's sand volleyball programs in the nation. We will be extremely competitive this year.

"As long as we execute the skills required in sand volleyball, we can compete with --and beat --any school in the nation."
