EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- A severe weather delay at MetLife Stadium could suspend USC-Syracuse game action for an extended period of time, stadium officials announced.

As the teams headed out onto the field to begin the second half, they were told to go back into their respective locker rooms. The announcement came at 5:20 p.m. ET, with an initial timing estimate of 30-45 minutes once the rain arrived. It began to rain at about 5:38 p.m. ET, but it could be a longer delay before play is resumed.

All fans in attendance were immediately directed to stand under the lower and middle level concourses for cover.

At the time action was stopped, No. 2 USC led Syracuse 14-3.

The last USC game to end early was in September 1990, against Ohio State at Ohio Stadium.
