The first series for the Trojans ended in a missed field goal, giving the Cardinal side a 3-0 lead.

Big plays on the drive included a Matt Barkley 13-yard pass to senior receiver Travon Patterson and a 19-yard run from running back Allen Bradford. Walk-on kicker Joe Houston, named the starting placekicker on Friday, pushed 46-yard field goal attempt right. With the defensive scoring system of three points for a stop, five points for a turnover and seven for a touchdown, the defense took a 3-0 lead.
