Notes, quotes and video from Wednesday's evening practice:
The injury issues on the offensive line continue. Butch Lewis (hip), Zack Heberer (concussion) and Kevin Graf (shoulder) did not participate in the evening practice due to prior injuries, but Khaled Holmes also sat out because of a neck stinger.
Practice highlights included a Mitch Mustain to Blake Ayles touchdown connection in which Ayles outran multiple defenders after catching the ball near the line of scrimmage and a Nickell Robey interception over the long arms of Kyle Prater.
Other areas of the field are experiencing the crunch as well. Linebacker Devon Kennard sat out with a toe injury but expects to practice Friday and scrimmage Saturday; receiver David Ausberry didn't suit up with a leg injury. Lane Kiffin said that Kennard would have played had Wednesday's practice been a game.
Speaking of Saturday's scrimmage, Kiffin and his staff are in the process of deciding whether or not to let defenders tackle. Since the coaching staff made the decision to eliminate tackling in the majority of practices, injuries haven't decreased, which is a point Kiffin is considering.
Final notes: Both practices Friday have been moved, with the morning practice set for 8 a.m. and the afternoon/evening one at 3:15 p.m....The Trojans have the day off Thursday, with meetings beginning at 12:30 p.m. Players will also receive their books for the fall semester, which begins Monday.
Kiffin was brief in his evening post-practice media session, but he did address the increasingly important issue of concussions -- and, more specifically, recovery times -- as well as other injury-based topics.
