You wouldn't expect a Parade All-American with NFL bloodlines to be overshadowed, but Marc Tyler has been lost in the pack at USC ever since his arrival was upstaged by the late commitment of Joe McKnight in 2007.
Now, as a redshirt junior, Tyler might finally have his chance. After Monday's practice, coach Lane Kiffin said Tyler probably will be the starter at tailback against Hawaii. A minor knee injury to Allen Bradford appears to have cracked the door for Tyler.
Tyler admits he lost confidence over the years, buried at times by USC's ridiculous depth at the tailback position. Losing something else seems to have helped him: weight. Tyler said he has dropped 15 pounds since spring football. He now weighs 218 pounds, he said.
"If I get the opportunity, I'm definitely going to take it and not look back," Tyler said. "That's what I've been waiting for since I got here."
