One of USC's best offensive linemen is in a constant battle with his weight. He can't seem to put on enough of it, especially during the season.

Matt Kalil, a 6-foot-7 left tackle, said his weightlifting and eating have been hampered because he's so busy. He has struggled to keep his weight at 300 pounds and he hopes to enter the 2011 season -- when he'll be a redshirt junior -- at 315.

He has used this bye week to double his weightlifting duties in an effort to regain the strength he has gradually lost throughout the first seven weeks. For a guy his height who just turned 21, it's not as easy gaining weight as you'd think. Between practice, class time and meetings, he can't find enough time to eat enough.

"It's definitely a job to keep my weight up. It's not something I enjoy," Kalil said. "Some people think it'd be fun to eat everything you can, but I can lose weight like that."

Genes are on Kalil's size. When his older brother, Ryan, arrived at USC, he also was an undersized offensive lineman. Now, he's in his fourth year starting for the Carolina Panthers and he's 6-foot-2, 295 pounds. Ryan Kalil got to see his brother play for USC for the first time Saturday against Cal. The Panthers had a bye week.
