Linebacker Lamar Dawson (Danville, Ky./Boyle County) picked USC over Tennessee as the Trojans' first commitment on National Signing Day.
Dawson was long expected to be a Volunteers lean, but the Trojans apparently swooped in on him over the last few weeks and changed his mind. He visited USC alongside a host of other out-of-state recruits Jan. 14.
"USC was my best visit, and I got along well with the players and especially the coaches," Dawson said in his announcement, broadcast live at the Louisville Courier-Journal's website. "I got to know coach [Joe] Barry real well and then he came out and met my mom on the home visit."
Two players USC was also recruiting -- safety Erique Florence (Valley, Ala./Valley) and cornerback Marcus Roberson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) -- chose other schools over the Trojans. Florence will attend close-to-home Auburn; Roberson chose Florida.
USC's next set of announcements come at 7 a.m., when offensive guard Aundrey Walker (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville) and linebacker Kent Turene (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla./Boyd Anderson) will pick their schools. Walker is expected to commit to USC; Turene, a one-time USC commit, is expected to choose Georgia.
