White team takes 6-0 lead at end of first quarter

USC's White team, or its defense, has taken a 6-0 lead here in the Spring Game at the Coliseum by virtue of an unusual scoring method.

The defenders get three points every time the offense, or Cardinal team, misses a field goal. And placekickers Andre Heidari (41) and Craig McMahon (40) have each missed their attempts, so the White team has taken the lead here in the early going.

Offensive highlights so far include a 25-yard pass from Matt Barkley to Markeith Ambles and a 36-yard run by redshirt freshman running back D.J. Morgan. Barkley was at the helm for one series, with backup Jesse Scroggins and freshman Max Wittek also getting chances to run the offense.

Receivers Brandon Carswell and De'Von Flournoy have limped to the sidelines with injuries, but neither appears to be serious.
