Basketball: USC to play Air Force, Long Beach State

USC will scrimmage Air Force on Saturday at the Galen Center in the Trojans' first tuneup for the 2011-2012 regular season, which begins two weeks from Friday against Cal State Northridge.

It's the second straight season USC will face Air Force in a preseason scrimmage. The Trojans won by 29 points, 75-46, last year, with then-freshman point guard Maurice Jones leading the way with 10 points and 10 assists.

Air Force, who went 16-16 in the Mountain West a year ago, runs a Princeton motion offense. Leading scorer Michael Lyons is known as a deadly midrange shooter.

The Trojans will also play Big West power Long Beach State next week as their other preseas0n scrimmage. The 49ers were 22-12 last season and are earning consideration for national Top-25 polls this year. Guard Casper Ware Jr., who averaged 17 points per game in 2010-2011, is an NBA prospect.

Stats and scores from the scrimmages are not public, and the scrimmages are closed to fans and the media.

Per the official NCAA rules for preseason scrimmages: "An official score and/or statistics for the practice scrimmage may not be kept. However, an institution may keep score and/or statistics for private use. The institution may not post the score and/or statistics in a newspaper, on the participating institutions’ Web sites, conferences’ Web sites or any other location."
