Draft connection: Jordan Walden

With their seventh-round pick Tuesday, the Angels picked Grayson Community College catcher Abel Baker, the younger brother of one of closer Jordan Walden's closest friends.

Aaron Baker, now a first baseman in the Pittsburgh Pirates' minor-league system, played travel ball with Walden in Texas. Abel Baker is two years younger.

"Now, I have a catcher to throw to in the off-season," Walden said.

Walden also attended Grayson, as did former Angels pitcher John Lackey.

* Angels manager Mike Scioscia used the occasion of Vernon Wells' return from the disabled list to shake up a lineup that had scored three runs or fewer in six straight games. Scioscia gave slumping Peter Bourjos and injury-prone leadoff man Maicer Izturis the night off and inserted Russell Branyan in the lineup for the first time in four days.
