Trout, Conger and musical chairs

A few hours before Friday night's game with the Baltimore Orioles, Angels manager Mike Scioscia had Vernon Wells and Bobby Abreu in his office for one-on-one meetings.

For Angels veterans, life is about to change. The arrival of the Angels' top prospect, Mike Trout, means that -- for the first time in either player's career -- Abreu and Wells might no longer be everyday players. It will be a similar adjustment for catcher Jeff Mathis now that Hank Conger is back. Scioscia said Conger will catch both of this weekend's games.

"They're going to give a shot to young guys, which I understand," Abreu said. "It's good."

The plan is to move Trout around, playing all three outfield positions, in an effort to inject his bat and legs into the lineup three or four times a week, Scioscia said. It appears Conger will get the bulk of the playing time at catcher. Scioscia was rather blunt about that situation.

"It's tough to absorb no offense from one position in our league and that's really what we've been getting from the catching position," Scioscia said.

One of the surprising parts about Friday's move is that the Angels didn't place Wells on the 15-day disabled list. He has a stiff neck from a collision with the outfield wall Wednesday night and, as of Friday, it was still sore. Batting .200, he probably could have used a little time to decompress.

"I'm in there today," Wells said. "I can't tell you about tomorrow or the next day. That all depends on other things, so you just worry about today and go out, win a game and come back here again and do it tomorrow."
