Brutal temperatures greet the Angels in Texas

Torii Hunter, who lives here and grew up about a five-hour drive from here, said, "It's like playing in a jacuzzi... underwater."

As I sit here typing this at 6:18 p.m. local time, the stadium thermometer says it's 103 degrees. Such temperatures at first pitch have been commonplace this season in Texas. But it's new to the Angels, who are coming off a homestand in which all of their first-pitch temperatures were in the 70s.

Catcher Bobby Wilson, scheduled to catch the first two games in this series, says he figures to lose seven to 10 pounds in water weight each game.

The heat figures to affect starting pitchers and catchers the most. The Angels are using two pitchers, Ervin Santana and Jered Weaver, on short rest in this series and the conditions aren't exactly conducive to stamina.

"Hyrdrate, use ammonia towels, ice your head, stay cool between innings," was pitching coach Mike Butcher's advice.
