DALLAS -- In his first meeting with reporters since missing a scheduled media briefing the day before, Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto offered little insight Wednesday into his team’s reported pursuit of coveted free-agent left-hander C.J. Wilson.

Dipoto also did not address reports the club is pursuing prize free-agent first baseman Albert Pujols.

“I will reserve comment,” Dipoto said. “We have expressed how much we are trying to improve our club in a variety of different ways. Speculation is as speculation is. Our net has been spread wide, but that isn’t necessarily where our focus is.”

Dipoto downplayed speculation his lack of availability Tuesday was the result of talks with Wilson heating up, saying he spent that time in several meetings with several clubs about potential trades.

“I can’t say I feel certain we are creeping up on anything,” Dipoto said. “We certainly continue to make progress on the things we are pursuing. If anything, I feel close to solving our desire to get deeper in the bullpen. If I had a sense we were going to get anything done quickly, that would be the first thing.”

That would seem to be an indication no agreement with Wilson is close to being in place, but Dipoto wasn’t revealing much.

“We are trying to improve in the areas we have discussed all along, by making trades or pursuing free-agent players,” Dipoto said. “We want to add to our starting pitching, our bullpen depth and the functionality of our lineup. But at this point, to get too uberspecific would really handcuff us, I think.”
