Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said Wednesday he would still like to lock up Gold Glove shortstop Erick Aybar to a multi-year contract before he reaches free agency in the fall. The Angels agreed to a one-year, $5.075 million deal with Aybar on Tuesday to avoid arbitration.

Dipoto said he would be willing to discuss an extension during the season, but that it's unlikely something would get done before then.

"We got a one-year deal done and I hope that's just a formality," Dipoto said.

* Dipoto also said he is satisfied with the conditioning of rehabbing slugger Kendrys Morales, who reported to camp last spring at least 10 pounds heavier than before he broke his ankle in 2010. Dipoto watched Morales take batting practice last week.

"I can't say I have a whole lot of history with Kendrys, but he looks strong as an ox to me," Dipoto said. "I can't see any reason to poke holes. He looks great, he's swinging the bat well and he's working his tail off."

* According to Dipoto, the Angels are unlikely to make any big-money acquisitions between now and the start of camp.

"At this point, we're trying to find depth, create competition in spring training and accentuate the strengths of the players on our roster," Dipoto said. "Anything more than that is probably very unlikely."
