The way the Angels' middle relievers were pitching, it was only a matter of time before somebody had to go. That somebody turned out to be Matt Palmer, who was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake before Friday night's game in Seattle.

The Angels selected the contract of veteran outfielder Michael Ryan from Salt Lake. To make room on the 40-man roster for Ryan, the team designated reliever Fernando Rodriguez for assignment.

Palmer had a 6.75 ERA and a 2.06 WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched). He's one of several struggling middle reliever, but the only one who still had an option.

Ryan, 32, who played several years for the Minnesota Twins, was batting .351, the fifth-best average in the PCL, through 12 games. He will wear No. 27, Vladimir Guerrero's old number. Ryan's arrival could mean Maicer Izturis is headed to the 15-day disabled list.
