Ernesto Frieri just glad to be considered

ANAHEIM -- Angels closer Ernesto Frieri won't be heading to the All-Star Game via major league baseball's final vote campaign, but that's all right with him.

Two months ago he received a surprising phone call from Padres general manager Josh Byrnes informing him he'd been traded. Frieri packed his things and drove two hours up the coast, not knowing exactly what to expect. New team, new league, new faces.

So for his name to even pop up in All-Star Game conversations was enough consolation.

"I'm aware that things are going well for me," Frieri said Thursday before the Angels opened a four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles. "But I didn't think I'd be considered. For me it's a great honor that I was even mentioned."

Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers earned the most fan votes to hold off White Sox veteran Jake Peavy and snag the final American League roster spot. Orioles starter Jason Hammel, Royals closer Jonathan Broxton and Frieri, in that order, rounded out the voting. In the National League, David Freese of the St. Louis Cardinals was voted in.

Frieri, a 26-year-old right-hander from Colombia, was acquired from San Diego on May 3 in exchange for minor leaguers Alexi Amarista and Donn Roach. He has not allowed a run as an Angel -- a streak that spans 24 1/3 innings -- and has 10 saves to go along with a 42-15 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
