Monday notes and lineups

By Mark Saxon

The Angels still are hoping to avoid placing their leading hitter, Howie Kendrick, on the 15-day disabled list, but manager manager Mike Scioscia also said it's going to be at least a couple of days "before we'd consider getting him into a game or even evaluating where he is."

Kendrick strained his right hamstring Thursday and hasn't played since.

"I don't think it's a DL thing," Kendrick said. "If it does happen, it'd be news to me."

* Scioscia acknowledged that the struggles at the bottom of the Angels' lineup have been an issue lately. In the final two games of the Atlanta series, the final five batters in the lineup combined to go 1-for-33.

Those last spots are where many of the Angels' least-experienced hitters bat and it appears opponents are exploiting their weaknesses as they get more information. Peter Bourjos, for example, batted .300 in April. He's hitting .147 this month.

"When you start to play for a while, the advance scouts see what you're doing well and they're going to try to adjust to it," Scioscia said. "There's a cat-and-mouse game that goes on."
