Scioscia pondering four-man rotation
By Mark Saxon
The Angels are considering using Jered Weaver and Ervin Santana on three days’ rest so they both can pitch this weekend at Texas, manager Mike Scioscia said Tuesday.
If they leave Weaver (14-6, 2.10 ERA) on the typical four days’ rest, he would miss this weekend’s series and Santana would pitch Sunday. The Angels would have to pick between their No. 4 and 5 starters, Joel Pineiro and Jerome Williams, for Saturday’s start. Dan Haren is scheduled to pitch Friday night.
Neither Weaver or Santana has ever pitched on fewer than four days’ rest in their career. The Angels, 4 ˝ games behind Texas going into Tuesday’s games, have just six games against the Rangers.
* Reliever Scott Downs, the Angels' eighth-inning specialist, remains unavailable because of a strained hamstring, Scioscia said. The Angels hope they can avoid putting Downs on the 15-day disabled list. Downs (6-2, 1.31 ERA) has been the Angels' most reliable reliever.
