OAKLAND -- The Angels rarely play well in Oakland, but they don't have the option of struggling over the next three days as they try to cling to the Texas Rangers in the AL West race. They have lost 11 of their last 16 games here.
The A's were officially eliminated from the playoffs after losing to Texas on Sunday, but they always get up for games against the Angels. Oakland has six more games against the Angels and three more against Texas, so they could be major players in this race.
"We spent a couple years here where it came down to the last games with the Angels," Oakland pitcher Rich Harden said. "It doesn't get any better than that, where those games mean so much, but we're definitely playing these games with motivation, knowing we can make a difference."
* Oakland's two-time All-Star closer, Andrew Bailey, was struck in the head by a line drive while shagging balls during batting practice and ruled out of tonight's game.
Bailey had a slight headache, but the A's don't expect the injury to be a lengthy one. Bailey stood up shortly after he was struck and walked into the A's clubhouse. A's catcher Kurt Suzuki hit the ball that struck Bailey.
* Assuming Jered Weaver is able to keep his pitch count manageable and feels healthy after Wednesday's start, it appears he will pitch on three days' rest Sunday in Baltimore. That would allow the Angels to keep him on regular rest and he would pitch his final two games at Angel Stadium, the last vs. the Rangers.
Weaver will pitch on three days' rest again, the only question is when.
"Your preference is to do it as early as possible, but it can be adjusted at the end," manager Mike Scioscia said.
