ANAHEIM – The Dodgers designated veteran utility man Chone Figgins for assignment Wednesday after his allotted days for a rehab assignment ran out.

"I think we all got pretty attached to who he is and what he brought to the club, but he got hurt and the situation changed," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "The main thing is we kind of like where our bench is right now."

Miguel Rojas has cemented himself in the Dodgers' plans because he replaces Hanley Ramirez late in games to give the Dodgers a better defensive presence. Figgins has played some shortstop, but his main positions are second and third base.

Figgins had been out since June 14 with a strained hip flexor. The team also traded for Darwin Barney, who is at Triple-A working on his defensive versatility.

Figgins, 36, made the team out of spring training after signing a minor league deal. In 38 games, he hit .217 with one RBI and four stolen bases.
