Stephen Fife to undergo Tommy John surgery

August, 13, 2014
ATLANTA – Stephen Fife did a nice job as a spot starter for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, going 4-4 with a 3.86 ERA. But aside from one start in Miami, Fife was hardly available to the Dodgers this season.

He had been dealing with an assortment of arm issues and, on Wednesday, his season ended. Fife was scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery, which means he will miss most of 2015 as well. Fife, 27, is 4-6 with a 3.66 ERA in 18 major-league games.

Fife made one early-May start in Miami and was under consideration for a start in Minnesota, manager Don Mattingly said, but he was otherwise viewed as not healthy enough to contribute. Fife’s injury is part of the reason the Dodgers went out and traded for veterans Roberto Hernandez and Kevin Correia after the non-waiver deadline.

“There haven’t been a whole lot of times when he’s been healthy down there,” Mattingly said of Fife.

The Dodgers also lost a little middle-infield depth when veteran Chone Figgins elected to go home to Florida rather than accept an assignment to Triple-A Albuquerque. The Dodgers, who had already designated Figgins for assignment, released him Tuesday.

It’s unclear whether Figgins will retire or try to catch on with a team next spring. He made the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster after he had signed a minor-league deal and hit .217 with a .373 on-base percentage. He had been on the disabled list with a strained quadriceps.
