LOS ANGELES -- Presuming the Los Angeles Dodgers stay in the playoff race for the next few weeks, the team will have some interesting pitching choices to make.
Manager Don Mattingly said he will look to maximize the starts of ace Clayton Kershaw in this final month, but that he's not considering using Kershaw on three days' rest -- at least for now. Kershaw, 24, could eclipse the 200-innings mark in his next start. Last season, while winning the Cy Young, he easily set a career high with 233 1/3 innings.
"We've got him lined up to pitch against the right people," Mattingly said. "If we got down to the very end or something like that, we would probably talk about something like that. But we're not thinking about doing any of that right now."
Here's one intriguing scenario: If the Dodgers feel like their best hope is through the wild card, do they pitch Kershaw Aug. 30 against the Colorado Rockies and hold him out of the final series against the San Francisco Giants? If they did, they could use Kershaw in the wild-card round, a one-game playoff.
Going into tonight's game, the Giants lead the Dodgers by five games. The extra wild card will make for some tough calls for managers in these final few weeks.
The Dodgers also promoted catcher Tim Federowicz and pitchers John Ely and Javy Guerra from Triple-A Albuquerque. Here are lineups for Saturday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks:
Arizona
Gerardo Parra LF
Aaron Hill 2B
Justin Upton RF
Paul Goldschmidt 1B
Miguel Montero C
Chris Young CF
Ryan Wheeler 3B
John McDonald SS
Tyler Skaggs P
Dodgers
Mark Ellis 2B
Shane Victorino LF
Adrian Gonzalez 1B
Matt Kemp CF
Hanley Ramirez SS
Andre Ethier RF
Luis Cruz 3B
