LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers will find out Tuesday from a doctor if closer Kenley Jansen will be lost for the season.

Jansen was hospitalized last week with an irregular heartbeat and has taken blood thinners since then for treatment. Jansen and the Dodgers will be told Tuesday if the blood thinners have resolved the issue. If they have, he could be back as early as Friday; if they have not, Jansen will be done for the year.



“There are two different anxieties,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. “Obviously you want Kenley to do what he has to do to be healthy. And the other anxiety is knowing you may get him or you may not get him. So there’s one on the baseball side and there’s another one just for his health and making sure he’s OK.”

Jansen, who also was hospitalized for treatment of an irregular heartbeat last season, leads the Dodgers with 25 saves. Ronald Belisario and Brandon League have split the closing duties in Jansen’s absence.

“Obviously you can’t say you’re going to go on without Kenley and be as good, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get it done,” Mattingly said. “That’s kind of how I look at it. It will be a challenge but you have to make things work, that’s all.

“But it’s like playing without Matt [Kemp]. We were able to win some games earlier in the year with guys hurt, but you know you’re not as good but you can make it work. You can still win games, and that’s how we have to look at it at the end of the day.”

If Jansen is lost for the season, Mattingly said he would consider reassigning injured starter Chad Billingsley as a short reliever. But Billingsley’s return this season is still a question mark, as well.

“The longer it goes, the likelihood of seeing him again gets lower and lower this season,” Mattingly said of Billingsley, who went on the disabled list Saturday with inflammation in his elbow, his second stint on the DL for the injury this season. “The longer you go where a guy can’t throw, the longer it takes to come back. If we had another month, he might be ready to go in October. But we don’t have another month.”
