LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers are joining one of the latest trends in baseball: doubling up on coaches.

They promoted John Valentin from Triple-A Albuquerque to serve as assistant hitting coach under Mark McGwire and they promoted Ken Howell from bullpen coach to be Rick Honeycutt's assistant pitching coach.

Also, they promoted minor league coach Chuck Crim to take over as bullpen coach for Howell.

The rest of the staff returns intact: Honeycutt (eighth season); Trey Hillman, bench coach (third season); Tim Wallach, third-base coach (third season); Davey Lopes, first-base coach (third season); Manny Mota, coach (34th season); Steve Yeager, catching coach (second season).
