Matt Kemp works some overtime

Matt Kemp spent part of his Monday afternoon visiting with students at the Pasadena middle school Jackie Robinson attended, discussing the legacy of erasing baseball's color barrier on the 66th anniversary of Robinson's first game.

It's something Kemp has always been passionate about.

"Every time you see a clip of Jackie or you see a documentary or whatever, somebody talking about Jackie Robinson, you see 'Dodgers' across the chest. For me, it's very special I get to put on this same jersey Jackie Robinson put on," Kemp said.

When he got to Dodger Stadium, the focus shifted to business. Kemp has gotten off to a glacially slow start, batting .174 with no home runs and four RBIs in his first 46 at-bats. He put in extra work Monday, with Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly sitting in on his usual afternoon session in the batting cage with hitting coach Mark McGwire.

The Dodgers are trying to determine if Kemp is still dealing with the fallout from an August shoulder injury. He had surgery in October.

"I'm convinced he's healthy," Mattingly said. "The biggest thing would be, does he have some bad habits, some things he needs to continue getting through."
