LOS ANGELES -- Zack Greinke said Tuesday he was not in favor of stricter rules, along the lines of the NBA, for major-league players who charge out of the dugouts or bullpens during fights.
NBA players receive automatic suspensions for leaving the bench during such incidents.
"I think it's part of the game and has been forever. I think any rule changes could lead to other things you don't want," Greinke said. "So, what, you're just going to fight one-on-one until one person dies? The umpires aren't going to be able to do much. Most of the people who come out of the dugout are trying to calm it down, not encourage it."
Greinke broke his left collarbone April 11 when he was charged by San Diego Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin, upset over being hit by a pitch. Greinke said he would like to return from the disabled list by the next time the Dodgers play the Padres, which is June 3.
"I don't know when that is, but probably," Greinke said.
It sounds as if he could be back even before that. Greinke threw his second 60-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and the Dodgers have clocked his fastball as high as 90 mph, a good indication he won't need an extended minor-league rehab assignment to rebuild arm strength.
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said it's possible Greinke's next trip to the mound could be in a minor-league game. That could have him returning within three weeks, more than two weeks earlier than the original timeline of eight weeks.
"He really hasn't lost much time," Mattingly said. "We feel like his arm strength's pretty good."
Additionally, Scott Van Slyke -- slugging .738 in Triple-A -- is being moved to the outfield at Albuquerque and probably will take Herrera's place on the Dodgers before long. The Dodgers would like to add some pop to their bench. Van Slyke, previously an outfielder, has been playing first base all season.
