Ryu cleared to pitch Sunday's opener

March, 28, 2014
LOS ANGELES – Dodgers manager Don Mattingly announced that Hyun-Jin Ryu will pitch the Dodgers’ U.S. opener Sunday night in San Diego.

Ryu threw a 30-pitch bullpen session before Friday’s game and said he felt no further pain in his right foot. He was questionable after tearing a toenail in his first start, Sunday in Australia.

“I feel OK,” Ryu said through a Korean reporter who acted as his interpreter.

The Dodgers had some uncertainty at the front of their rotation after Ryu injured himself pitching in Australia last weekend and Clayton Kershaw came down with a stiff upper back after the long flight home. But it looks like those setbacks won’t have much of a long-term impact on the staff.

Ryu will pitch Sunday, Zack Greinke will go Tuesday and Dan Haren will pitch Wednesday. The Dodgers are off Monday, a rare open date on the road created when ESPN chose these teams for the Sunday night game.
  • There was a 5.1-magnitude earthquake centered about 25 miles east of Dodger Stadium, in La Habra, Calif., during the middle innings Friday, but apparently the players had no idea. Adrian Gonzalez and reliever J.P. Howell said they didn’t feel a thing, as did a security guard outside the Dodgers clubhouse. The press box was rocking gently for about 30 seconds.
  • Darnell Sweeney had the game-winning hit in the Dodgers’ 5-4 win in 10 innings. Sweeney played for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes last year.
