Waiting for the other shoe to drop

By Mark Saxon

LOS ANGELES -- There was a little confusion mixed into the excitement in the Dodgers' clubhouse before Friday night's game with the Miami Marlins. Many of the players were glued to clubhouse TVs as details of trade talks with the Boston Red Sox involving Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett were being reported.

Pitcher Rubby De La Rosa, who reportedly would be headed to Boston in the deal, was originally told he was being sent to Triple-A Albuquerque. Told by reporters that the Dodgers had changed his assignment to Double-A Chattanooga, De La Rosa said, "OK, then Chattanooga."

First baseman James Loney, reportedly another piece in the deal, emerged from manager Don Mattingly's office, then spent several minutes on his cellphone in the tunnel that leads from the clubhouse. Later, he went through the usual pregame warmups with the team. He couldn't say much, because -- he said -- he didn't know much.

"Would I be disappointed? I don't know what's going to happen," Loney said. "I don't know where I'm going to be. We'll see what happens."

Loney has been a Dodger since 2006 and played with several of these players in the minor leagues. Outfielder Andre Ethier admitted it would be "mixed emotions" for the team if the reported blockbuster goes through.

"The owners said they were gong to try to do some stuff," Matt Kemp said. "We'll see, guys. I'm not going to talk about some stuff that hasn't happened yet."
