On the second day, Crawford rests

By Mark Saxon

LOS ANGELES -- Carl Crawford's return went better than expected in spring training, but the Dodgers aren't yet ready to let him go without restrictions less than eight months off elbow surgery.

In the season's second game, manager Don Mattingly replaced Crawford in left field with utility man Jerry Hairston Jr. Mattingly said Crawford is not hurt and that it wasn't a matter of a matchup with San Francisco Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner.

It was, Mattingly said, a matter of precaution.

"I think Carl’s going to want to get out there every day, but it’s a plan we have for Carl," Mattingly said. "Carl’s a worker. He just loves to hit and hit and go and go. He’s a full-speed guy. He gets after it pretty good, so it’s part of just kind of getting his feet wet. "

Crawford, who went 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run on Opening Day Monday, wasn't particularly keen on discussing his absence from the lineup before the game.

"Did you talk to the manager?" Crawford said. "I don't know, man. I just came in, saw I wasn't in the lineup. You have to ask him."

Crawford, who played in the American League East until August, has not faced Bumgarner. Mattingly said he regrets removing Crawford for Skip Schumaker for the final inning of Monday's game and that he plans on leaving Crawford in games for nine innings once he is playing every day.
