Few signs of thawing between Ethier, Mattingly

By Mark Saxon

LOS ANGELES -- Andre Ethier was back in the lineup for Friday night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals, which is a pretty good indication manager Don Mattingly retains some faith in him, at least against right-handed pitching.

But their relationship could take a while longer to repair.

Ethier and Mattingly haven't spoken since Wednesday, both the player and manager said Friday. Ethier said he would welcome a sit-down meeting with Mattingly, who benched him Wednesday and questioned his competitiveness to reporters. Ethier admitted he was still bothered by the perception he doesn't compete hard enough.

"I don't think we need to let that linger around here," Ethier said. "We all know what our common goal is around here and that's to figure out how to make this thing right, get us in position to be a good, cohesive group all pulling the same direction."

Ethier told reporters in Milwaukee he was disappointed Mattingly didn't discuss his feelings before Wednesday's game. Mattingly said he sat down with him for 20 minutes before that game and told him exactly how he felt.

"We talked for sure. I know I'm getting old, but I remember that much," Mattingly said. "We definitely talked."

Ethier said he hasn't begun contemplating whether his future in Los Angeles might be a short-term one. His name has surfaced in trade rumors since November and this latest spat with Mattingly probably means he'll be in more over the coming months.
