Matt Kemp's ankle injury proving stubborn

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers had a bonanza of positive news about injured players before Wednesday night's game with the New York Mets, but one player has been making slower-than-expected progress.

Matt Kemp was thought to be about 5-7 days from returning from a sprained left ankle, but the Dodgers expect him to need more time than that.

"I'm not feeling really great about that," Mattingly said.

Kemp has been fine in batting practice, but has barely tested the ankle by running. He has yet to run the bases, or even make turns on the outfield grass.

Many people wondered what would happen when Kemp, Andre Ethier, Yasiel Puig and Carl Crawford were all healthy, giving the Dodgers four quality outfielders for three spots. That problem arose for one game, on July 21, in which Kemp injured his ankle sliding awkwardly into home.
