End of the 2nd period:

Kings 1, Ducks 0

The good: The Kings were awarded a 5-on-3 power play after Anaheim rookies Andrew Gordon and Maxime Macenauer went to the penalty box 17 seconds apart early in the period. Kings defenseman Jack Johnson, playing in his 300th career game, shot wide from the high slot but the puck caromed to Mike Richards to the left of the goal and he scored from a tough angle before Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller could get back into position. Johnson came into the game tied for eighth among NHL defensemen in power-play points. Richards now has five goals, third most on the team behind Anze Kopitar (eight) and Simone Gagne (six). Richards already has seven shots on goal, the most by a Kings’ player in any game this season. Kings third-line center Jarret Stoll, who came into the game having won 68 of his last 112 faceoffs (60.7 percent) has won six of eight against the Ducks.

The bad: The Kings had a golden opportunity to go up, 2-0, with about three minutes remaining in the period. Dustin Brown and Andrei Loktionov, playing his first game for the Kings this season, set off on a 2-on-1. Brown slid the puck over to Loktionov who made a beautiful pass back to Brown who was crashing the far post. Brown had an open side of the net but shot wide and Ducks fans let out a big sigh of relief. The Kings have out-shot the Ducks, 29-12, through two periods and must feel like they should be leading by more than just a goal.

The in between: Kopitar made his first trip to the penalty box this season, getting called for holding Matt Beleskey with seven minutes left in the period, but the Kings killed that one too. After getting out-hit, 16-7, in the opening period, the Kings repaid the favor with a 10-5 advantage in the second. With forwards Scott Parse and Dustin Penner on injured reserve, Trent Hunter is getting opportunities on the second power-play unit for the Kings.
