Kings 1, Ducks 1

The good: The Kings had fallen behind, 1-0, when Mike Richards won a faceoff two minutes later against Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf in the offensive zone. The puck came back to defenseman Drew Doughty at the left point. He let go of a blast that Richards tipped in the high slot and it skidded past Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller to tie the score, 1-1, with 3:43 remaining in the period. Richards is in his first game back after missing the last eight with a concussion. Darryl Sutter, making his debut as head coach of the Kings, couldn’t get a better house-warming gift. The Kings went 0-2 on the power play in the second period but will have a man advantage for the first 1:41 of the second after Getzlaf snapped Willie Mitchell’s stick with a slash. The Kings continue to own the edge in shots on goal, 25-15.

The bad: The Ducks broke the ice with a goal by Niklas Hagman with 6:05 left in the period. Anaheim had just killed the second penalty when defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky took a shot from just inside the blue line that was heading wide. Hagman was camped out by the left post, however, and he got a stick on the sliding puck, redirecting it past Kings goalie Jonathan Quick. Hagman, a waiver-wire pickup from Calgary earlier this season, has been a bright spot in an otherwise dismal season for the Ducks, scoring six goals in 24 games, the same goal total as Getzlaf in 34. The Ducks have blocked 13 shots compared to one for L.A.

The in between: Just before the goal by Richards, third-line center Jarret Stoll limped off the ice after a hit on Getzlaf and went straight to the locker room. He re-emerged a few minutes later, but did not take any shifts in the closing minutes. That will be something to watch in the third period.
