Except for Wayne Simmonds, the Kings didn’t look like a team expected to compete for a Stanley Cup title.
Simmonds scored two goals in a 4-2 road loss Thursday against the Phoenix Coyotes, dropping the Kings to 4-2-0 on the season.
The Kings are expected to be without defenseman Drew Doughty for the remainder of the five-game road trip. Doughty suffered an upper-body injury during the first period of a 4-3 victory Monday against Carolina.
Lee Stempniak scored three goals to lead Phoenix. Simmonds scored on a breakaway to cut the deficit to 3-1. He added his second goal in the third period before Stempniak scored an empty-net goal late in the third to reclaim the two-goal advantage.
