Kings: Setoguchi scores late to give San Jose a 1-0 lead

By Dan Arritt

End of the 2nd period:

San Jose Sharks 1, Kings 0

The good: One goal is a lot better than six, which is what the Kings allowed through two periods in each of their last two games. The Kings almost made it through the period unscathed, but Devin Setoguchi scored with 1 minute 6 seconds remaining. They’ve at least out-shot the Sharks, 21-11, and rookie forward Kyle Clifford already has a season-high seven hits for Los Angeles.

The bad: The Kings have had their problems defending opponent’s speed through the neutral zone this season and that’s what happened on Setoguchi’s goal. He received a pass with a full head of steam just before the Kings’ blue line, cut across the middle and beat Jonathan Quick on his stick side. The Kings are also 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

The in between: Until Setoguchi scored, the game was remarkable similar to the one in San Jose on Monday night. The Kings out-shot the Sharks, 30-14, through two periods in that meeting, but had nothing to show for it. Then they lit up San Jose for four goals in the third and won, 4-0. Sharks goalie Antti Niemi is stopping everything, just as he did Monday night. It might take some sort of deflection in front of the net to beat him tonight. He seems to be seeing the puck very well off the blade.
