Doug StevensNewport Harbor's Farrel South (15) score four goals against in-town rival Corona del Mar.
Before a standing-room only crowd at Newport Harbor, the Sailors turned back rival Corona del Mar over the weekend in its annual Battle of the Bay.
Newport Harbor was ranked No. 2 in the Southern Section Division 1 rankings, and Corona del Mar was ranked No. 1 in the Division 2 rankings.
Farrel South scored four goals as Newport won the nonleague showdown for city bragging rights, 9-5. Junior Curtis Fink added three goals for Newport (17-1). Koby Yokota had nine saves in goal.
Newport converted five of seven man-advantage opportunities, while CdM (15-5) converted only two of eight.
Newport also beat the Sea Kings in the finals of the S&R Sport Cup on Oct. 8.
Even though these games are always big, the Sailors realistically have a more important game awaiting; on Wednesday, Newport plays a Sunset League match against Los Alamitos, which was ranked No. 5.
