Fans, supporters and celebrities poured out in support of the San Feranando baseball team after the Tigers won their first CIF City Section championship since 1991.

San Fernando beat Chatsworth, 8-6, in the championship game at Dodger Stadium. But when it came time to buy rings commemorating their championship season, the players and parents didn’t have the money to pay for them. It was later discovered that the 1991 team was in the same boat and never received rings for the championship season.

The baseball players started selling T-shirts recognizing both championship teams, 20 years apart, to raise money for equipment, uniforms and hopefully rings.

That’s when comedian George Lopez stepped in. He graduated from San Fernando High in 1977 and played a little baseball when he was a student. He offered to buy the players their rings and help out raising funds for equipment.

At least the 2011 San Fernando players will have a precious memento from their championship season.
