The Eagle Rock girls' water polo team won the CIF City Section championship, 10-8, over El Camino Real on Thursday at Contreras Learning Complex.

It was the first water polo championship in school history for Eagle Rock.

Lindsey Garcia scored four goals for Eagle Rock, the top seed in the water polo playoffs.

Her goal with 2:25 left in the match gave Eagle Rock a 9-8 lead, according to a story in the Daily News. Elizabeth Gonzalez scored about a minute later to give Eagle Rock a two-goal lead.

Better late than never for Sherman Oaks Notre Dame

The Sherman Oaks Notre Dame boys' basketball team didn’t win a single game in Mission League play. The Knights entered the Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs with an 0-12 record in league play and a 13-game losing streak.

They had to wait a day to play their first-round game because of snow and ice on the Antelope Valley freeway leading out to Paraclete in Lancaster. Notre Dame played Paraclete in the first round.

But the Golden Knights (10-18) beat Paraclete, 51-42, and advanced to the second round.

Notre Dame coach Bill Bedgood, who announced he was resigning as coach of the team last week, told the Daily News his players settled down in the second half after a jittery first half.

Notre Dame was down by four points, 22-18, at halftime. The Knights outscored Paraclete (15-8), 19-8, in the third quarter to take a seven-point lead.

It doesn’t get any easier for Notre Dame in the second round. The Knights play Price, a 10-time Southern Section champion, tonight at home.

Price (20-7) advanced to the Division 3AA championship game last year and lost to La Canada. Price qualified for the CIF State Division 3 playoffs and lost to Inglewood in the second round.

Snow day in Big Bear

One game has yet to be played in the Division 4AA playoffs. Big Bear (20-2) and Banning (13-14) have not played their first-round playoff game because of snow and icy roads.

The winner of the game will play La Verne Lutheran (20-6) in the second round.

The game between Big Bear and Banning will be played at 6 tonight. The second-round playoff game will be at the University of La Verne at 1 p.m. Saturday.
