Nick Ruiz, the Crescenta Valley goalkeeper, scored a goal in stoppage time to tie the score and send the CIF Southern Section Division 4 quarterfinal playoff game against Salesian into overtime on Thursday.
Crescenta Valley won the game in overtime, 3-2, to advance to the semifinals of the Division 4 playoffs. The Falcons, undefeated at 19-0-6, will play Oak Hills in Hesperia on Tuesday.
Ruiz, a senior, scored the first goal of his high school career. Crescenta Valley coach Grant Clark said he knew it was going to probably be the last play of the game. Ruiz scored in the 13th minute of stoppage time. Clark pushed all his players, including the goalkeeper, into the Salesian goal box and after the ball rattled around off a throw in, Ruiz knocked the ball into the net to tie the score 2-2.
