L.A. North: The top 10

Renaissance Academy made a leap in the L.A. North top 10 rankings. The Wildcats are the No. 6 team after winning the Southern Section Division 6 championship.

Crescenta Valley made an impressive run in the Southern Section Division 1A playoffs and earned the No. 16 seed in the CIF Division I Southern California Regional playoffs.

Grant lost in the City Section Division 3 championship game. As a result, Crescenta Valley enters the L.A. North top 10 and Grant exits.

Here is a look at the L.A. North top 10:

  1. (1) Woodland Hill Taft (29-3) – The Toreadors repeated as City Section Division 1 champions and earned the No. 3 seed in the CIF State Southern California Regional playoffs. Taft beat Dorsey, 58-42, to win its fourth City Section championship in school history. Jason Hart won his first CIF championship in his first year as coach at Taft.

  2. (2) Alemany (28-4) – The Warriors won the Southern Section Division 3A championship, 72-60, over Oak Park and earned the No. 1 seed in the CIF State Southern California Regional playoffs. Alemany plays Independence from Bakersfield in the first round of the Southern California Regional on Wednesdday.

  3. (3) Calabasas (27-3) – The Coyotes won the Southern Section Division 3AA championship blowing out South Torrance, 69-39. It was the first Southern Section boys basketball championship for Calabasas. The Coyotes are the No. 3 seed in the CIF State Southern California Division III Regional and will play Frontier from Bakersfield in the first round.

  4. (4) Royal (24-7) – The Highlanders lost to unseeded Inglewood in the championship game of the Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs. J.R. Powell scored 16 points for Royal, the seventh-seeded team in the Division 2AA playoffs. Royal is the No. 10 seed in the CIF State Southern California Regional Division II playoffs and plays San Joaquin Memorial from Fresno in the first round.

  5. (5) El Camino Real (18-7) – The Conquistadores won the City Section Division 2 championship over Garfield at the Roybal Learning Center. El Camino Real is the No. 8 seed in the Division II Southern California Regional and will play Colony from Ontario in the first round.

  6. (10) Renaissance Academy (24-6) – The Wildcats captured the Southern Section Division 6 championship over California Lutheran and ended a dominant run in the playoffs. Renaissance Academy advances to the CIF State Tournament as the No. 3 seed in the Southern California Division V Regional.

  7. (6) Providence (26-5) – The Pioneers lost to Holy Martyrs, 65-62, in overtime of the Southern Section Division 5A playoffs. Providence can reset its season in the CIF State Tournament. The Pioneers are the No. 10 seed in the Division V Southern California Regional and plays Mission Prep from San Luis Obispo in the first round.

  8. (7) Oak Park (24-8) – Oak Park has an interesting match-up in the first round of the CIF State Tournament. The Eagles play Grant from Van Nuys, the City Section Division 3 runner-up, in the first round of the Division III Southern California Regional.

  9. (8) Thousand Oaks (21-9) – The Lancers made an unexpected run to the semifinals of the Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs. Thousand Oaks continues its magical season in the CIF State tournament as the No. 13 seed in Division II of the Southern California Regional. The Lancers open against Elsinore in the first round.

  10. (NR) Crescenta Valley (26-7) – The Falcons lost to Mission Viejo in the semifinals of the Southern Section Division 1A playoffs. Crescenta Valley is in the CIF State tournament, but has a tough test in the first round. The Falcons play top-seeded Mater Dei in the Southern California Division I Regional. Mater Dei is also the No.1 team in the ESPN Los Angeles basketball rankings.
