GRANADA HILLS -- Servite coach Troy Thomas and Granada Hills Kennedy coach Dion Lambert were teammates in an all-star football game when they were in high school 25 years ago.

Both were cornerbacks on the team. Thomas readily admits Lambert was the real star, by far a better player than he was back in high school.

There is little question who is coaching the better team. Servite is coming off a CIF state championship season and an opening night victory over Oceanside, which won its own state title last year.

Servite, the No. 1 team in the ESPNLA.com Top 25 rankings, improved to 2-0 with a convincing 48-7 win over Kennedy on Thursday night. Thomas said after the game he thought Kennedy played well despite the score. Thomas added that he holds Lambert’s team in high regard and that Lambert’s players handled the loss well.

Servite’s junior quarterback Cody Pittman threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another. He was 13-for-15 for 141 yards and completed nine passes in a row at one point.

He completed touchdown passes to Robert Abeyta, Malik Felton and Sam Hunt. Pittman threw only two passes in the second half, both touchdowns. His first was a 33-yarder to Felton with just over 10 minutes to play in the third quarter. His second was a 25-yard pass to Hunt with 11:12 to play in the fourth quarter.

Pittman’s night at quarterback ended after his touchdown pass to Hunt. Servite had a 41-0 lead but wasn’t done scoring.

Michael Zuniga intercepted a pass on Kennedy’s ensuing drive and returned it 20 yards to the Kennedy 5-yard line. From there, Jherremya Leuta-douyere scored Servite’s final touchdown on a 5-yard plow of a run into the end zone.

Kennedy scored its lone touchdown in the fourth quarter. Kennedy running back Jonathan Williams fumbled after a short gain into the alert arms of teammate Nate Raymunodo. Raymundo took the ball and scampered down the sideline 65 yards to the Servite 5-yard line.

Williams finished the scoring drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with 10:03 to play.

Williams led all rushers with 78 yards in 21 carries.

Sean Derosa gained 75 yards in 13 carries for Servite. Felton caught five passes for 60 yards.
