Led by Xavier Johnson's 40 points, Mater Dei overcame a sluggish start to beat Anaheim Canyon, 73-64, to win the Loara tournament championship.
Mater Dei was down after one quarter, 17-13, and pulled to a low-scoring 24-24 tie by halftime. Johnson, after keeping Mater Dei in the game in the first half, scored 25 of his 40 in the second as the Monarchs separated from the Comanches.
Johnson was named the tournament MVP. Chris Anderson had 18 points and 14 rebounds for Canyon.
